WHAT WE WEAR
EXHIBITION
What We Wear: 135 Years of Columbia Style celebrates the rich history of student fashion at Columbia College Chicago. Since 1890, students have used clothing as a creative outlet—expressing identity, challenging norms, and reflecting the spirit of their time. College is a space for transformation, and at Columbia, that change often shows up in bold, eclectic, and intentional style. Whether heading to class, performing on stage, or joining a protest, students dress not just to be seen, but to be understood. This exhibition features archival photographs and garments from the Fashion Study Collection, capturing moments where fashion and creativity intersect. Each look tells a story—not just about trends, but about self-expression, politics, community, and change. Columbia style has never been one-size-fits-all. It’s a patchwork of individuality, shaped by the city, the times, and the people who wear it.
The design approach for the exhibition centered on spotlighting the garments themselves—letting each piece tell its story. A bold wash of Yves Klein Blue set the tone, catching the eyes of students who couldn’t help but pause and take a closer look. The vibrant color created a striking backdrop, allowing the textures, details, and personalities of the clothes to shine. Each era was represented with care, using curated garments to reflect the evolution of style and identity across generations. The goal was to create a cohesive, immersive experience that honored the bold, diverse spirit of Columbia’s fashion legacy.
